A Mexican Fairytale
Rafael was born during a time of struggle in the year 1925 in a small town in the land of the Charro and the Mariachi; it was the beginning of a new era in the young Mexican Republic, as most of its territory was suffering from the hardships left by the recent Mexican revolution and the looming of a new and more cruel war, the Cristero Rebellion.
It was during this time that Rafael was being raised at the heart of the armed conflict in a remote town in the state of Zacatecas; and it was until his adulthood that life put him in a collision path that would result in an epic journey.
The Journey Begins
The adventure began on 1949 during a Coleadura – a traditional charro event –, in the small town of Sombrerete, behind the house of the Regis family. On that day Rafael arrived on his horse to enjoy the spectacle. As he was gazing through the venue and through the family house, his eyes set on a girl standing at the rooftop; he became hypnotized by her beauty. He didn't know, but he was admiring Jesusita, the beautiful daughter of Don Francisco Regis, owner of the house. Rafael had to meet her; but that was not going to by an easy task.
Jesusita was a shy and reserved girl and her beauty was her doom, she lived in complete reclusiveness as her father didn't let her out of the house, not even to go to school and the only way of enjoying the Coleaduras was to get on to the rooftop. That day, as she was watching the show, her intuition started telling her that something was quite different, and with each passing moment the feeling grew stronger, it was as if someone was just staring at her. As she look down searching for the cause of her anxiety, her eyes met those of Rafael.
The family chronicles tell us that through a distant relative Rafael sent an invitation to Jesusita to go to a Coleadura in a nearby ranch; San Pascual. In order for Jesusita to get permission to attend, she had to lie about the real reasons and she would only be allowed to go with the companionship of her cousin. It was through this relative that Rafael and Jesusita started a secret relationship.
The relationship went on for approximately eight months, but with the couple seeing each other only a few times and with the added effort of having to be extremely careful, as both of Jesusita's brothers would always keep an eye on her whenever she would go out; Rafael decided it was time to do something about it, something bold; his plan: to ride away with Jesusita.
